About the Bris
בְּרִית מִילָה
The Mitzvah
In Leviticus 12:3, G‑d commands, “On the eighth day, the flesh of his foreskin shall be circumcised.” This act signifies the completion of the body and underscores the importance of human effort in achieving spiritual, emotional, moral, and ethical growth. It teaches us that while G‑d provides guidance, it is up to us to strive for perfection.
Throughout life, we form various partnerships, many of which may eventually end. The Bris Milah, however, represents an everlasting partnership with G‑d, etched into the flesh as a perpetual reminder of our unbreakable bond.
The Mohel
A mohel is a highly trained professional who not only performs the physical procedure of circumcision but is also well-versed in Jewish laws regarding Bris Milah. It is essential to choose a mohel who possesses excellent technical skills, shows genuine care for your child, and ensures that you, the parents, feel comfortable and reassured throughout the process.
About the Bris
The Bris Milah (Brit), or circumcision, is a profound symbol of the covenant between G‑d and the Jewish people. This sacred ritual, held on the eighth day of a baby boy's life, marks his formal entry into the Jewish community. Performed by a skilled mohel, it is a joyous occasion celebrating the continuation of Jewish heritage and faith.
Baby Naming
Jewish names are a cornerstone of Jewish identity. Parents often name their children after departed loved ones, significant events, or simply choose names that resonate with them. For boys, the name is given during the circumcision ceremony. For girls, the name is traditionally conferred during the Torah reading shortly after birth.
